5 quick to Oscar Berg on "the digital workplace"

Oscar Berg is digital business developer and CEO at Unicorn Titans. He reasently released his latest book The digital workplace. Actually, the same day as he was Keynote speaker at the Grand opening of Xllnc new Logistics Centre in Vaxjö on October 20.

Why did you write the book?
The proper functioning of the digital workplace is essential for an organisation to succeed with the digitalization of their activities. To get more of the potential of each employee and the workforce as a whole to be able to meet and exceed customer expectations. As organizations, we need to be more productive, fast-moving and innovative at the same time. It requires smart digital way of working and a digital workplace that supports this and brings the employees.

However, the digital work environments that many organizations offer today leads to the opposite — frustration, inefficiencies and poor ability. This is due to the fact that they have emerged as a city without planning, without a clear picture of needs and governance. At least, they have not been designed for the people who work in them.

More and more organisations understand this, but they don't know where to start or how to work to change it. Our book gives them just that. A practical and structured approach to transform the digital working environment so that your organization gets the right conditions to digitalize their business.

Has´nt the workplace been digital for a long time now, or what's happening?

We've had the tools and systems, but neither the individual tools and systems or the digital working environment as a whole has been designed on the basis of how we, as individuals and collectives to work smarter and digital first. The traditional and continuing the dominant approach is that it is procuring IT systems to support processes or business functions. There is no design thinking, holistic approach and the user at the Center. If you continue with this, it's like pouring gasoline on the fire. For each new system or tool that introduces worsens the situation, even if the intent is to improve. Therefore, we define the digital workplace that is the opposite of this: a consciously crafted digital work environment, designed on the basis of a holistic approach and with the user at the Center.

Can we really make a distinction between that which is a place for work and a place for private life, they do not float up? And is there really a place?

- The work is for most no longer have a place. Nor private life. We can work at different locations and we can live our private lives in different places. We can sit at home at the dinner table and work and shop for groceries online when we are in your workplace. We can also switch between work and private life in the space of a second. Whether we want to make is about the work or personal life, it is important that we are able to do that in the situations we find ourselves and as required.

Most of us have not yet begun to think digitally without thinking is still at work and private life as something linked to physical locations. But a site need not be physical. A place is by definition a defined area, in this case such an abstract delimiting what we need to do our work from that related to other things, such as privacy.

The concept of "the digital workplace" has an important role because it puts words on something else becomes very abstract and difficult to grasp. We need to be able to see the big picture and create an environment that is coherent and well functioning.

What are the three most common challenges of digitization of a workplace?

The biggest challenge is always the culture and employees ' understanding of and attitudes towards the change that is required, from management to the floor.

Then, how to manage complexity, fragmentation and any dependencies that exist. It requires that the Organization adopt a holistic approach and a common vision, conceptual world, governance and coordination. All must work towards the same overall objective to avoid the same type of address that created the problems that now need to be addressed.

Finally, a great challenge to understand the different needs of users in different situations and to constantly keep the focus on users. Otherwise you end up often back in the faith and hope that a system or tool to solve all the problems on something "automagically" means. It is and remains a pure delusion.

What is the most fascinating of the currently ongoing digital transformation of the workplace, what am saying you for the next three years?
What I personally find most fascinating is the shift in mindset and leadership necessary to succeed. And mod. You may need to overturn many existing assumptions, solutions and approaches to thinking about from the beginning. Digitization is about to ask the question: How can we create value if we consider digital from the beginning and play after the digital gaming policies for value creation?

It is not only in the development of customer interaction and offer to the customer as an organization need to think so, but also when they develop their own activities. And where is the digital workplace central when it comes to their ability to digitization. Over the next three years, we will begin to see which organisations can handle make this shift in mindset and direction.
